That’s why when you join us as a new graduate, you’ll be supported every step of the way. Starting as part of our national cohort, you’ll take part in a comprehensive induction and training program to ensure you’ve got the skills to hit the ground running.     

In addition ample formal learning sessions, you’ll also receive plenty of on-the-job learning opportunities as well as regular coaching and feedback from your team leaders. We want you to learn more, be inspired to expand your horizons and discover exactly what you’re capable of.  

Our open and team based structure will give you the opportunity to interact with senior business leaders from early in your career and you will have exposure to a wide variety of clients, benefiting from the knowledge and experience of your colleagues along the way.

Meet Lachie

Name: Lachie Strathmore
Job Title: Associate
Service Line: Private Business Tax & Advisory
University Attended: University of Melbourne
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Commerce
Year graduated: 2020

Lachie started as a graduate in March 2021, after completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at University of Melbourne. After doing rotations in Audit during a vacationer program and Lachie decided to seek a position in Grant Thornton’s Private Business Tax & Advisory team.

Working on mainly compliance matters, Lachie enjoys helping clients navigate and comply with their various tax obligations with the ATO. “I find it interesting understanding the bigger picture of a family group – from the main trading entity, to the various companies and trusts in the business structure, and then through to the individuals. There is a lot of variety in the different clients, and I work with lots of different people in my division,” says Lachie.

How have you been supported in development so far? Lachie says one of the great things about working at Grant Thornton is the opportunity for coaching and mentoring. “There are great systems in place, and all of the people are incredibly generous with their time and happy to help you. Whilst you are definitely thrown in the deep-end with all the technical knowledge of a new job, the people around you keep you afloat and make sure you are understanding and progressing. There is a constant feedback loop, and conversations about your own career progression are constant.”

So what’s the best thing about working at Grant Thornton? “How possible it is to make an impact if you take some initiative. I have taken an active role in designing new training sessions, particularly for the incoming graduates and vacationers. I was supported by people at all levels, and was never told to stay in my lane or just focus on the work I’d been given. If you have something you want to innovate, you can do it and have people support you.”

Meet Ivy

Name: Ivy Xiong
Job Title: Associate
Service Line: Restructuring Advisory
University Attended: The University of Melbourne
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Finance
Year graduated: 2019

Ivy is an Associate in our Restructuring Advisory team, focusing on personal insolvency and individuals who experience financial hardship and go through bankruptcy. Like a lot of our graduate cohort, Ivy completed the summer vacation program and was then offered a graduate position for 2020. “Having the vacationer experience made the transition easier as I was already familiar with the systems processes, the people and could jump right into the work,” Ivy said.

Since starting as a graduate in 2020, Ivy has been promoted to a Senior Associate role and taken on a lot of additional responsibilities within the team.

What do you love most about your job? “I love the very personal and human aspect of my job, I get to help real-life people going through real-life problems. For an individual going through bankruptcy, we help remove the stress of creditors chasing them.”

What do you think set you apart and helped you secure a role in Financial Advisory with Grant Thornton? “With data analytics becoming increasingly important in the financial analysis field, I think my experience studying abroad at Harvard University set me up with the required knowledge for a role in Financial Advisory. At Harvard, I even undertook an R Programming subject - it wasn’t quite as easy as expected but this has provided us with a solid foundation in programming; a skill that is becoming more and more useful.”

What firm training has been the most relevant to your role? “The Restructuring Advisory team provides data analytic training through various excel modules. I’m a numbers person so I also enjoy conducting financial analysis on assets and returns creditors may be able to receive at the conclusion of a bankruptcy.”

Meet James

Name: James Dang
Job Title: Associate
Service Line: Private Business Tax & Advisory
University Attended: University of Melbourne
Degree qualification: Bachelor of Commerce
Year graduated: 2020

James joined Grant Thornton as a graduate in 2021 after undertaking a month long vacationer program placement in the Private Advisory division at Grant Thornton. As associate in the Private Advisory team, James assists with the preparation of tax returns for a variety of clients and client groups including companies, trusts and individuals with a focus on private clients. But it’s not all tax returns – James also enjoy being involved with different types of work such as tax advisory, financial modelling, forecasting and business reporting.

James says that the learning and development opportunities and support offered are what makes Grant Thornton different. “Grant Thornton has supported my learning and development through funding my further studies with both the Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and Chartered Accountants (CA) programs. I am really fortunate enough to be working with a group of people who appreciate my contributions and reciprocate this by taking an interest in my ongoing development.”

Meet Julia

Name: Julia Lane
Job Title: Associate
Service Line: Financial Advisory
University Attended: Monash University
Degree qualification: Bachelor Degree in Communication Design Bachelor Degree in Business (Accounting)
Year graduated: 2021

Julia’s journey with Grant Thornton has really only just begun. After joining as an undergraduate in May 2021, Julia commenced her graduate year in 2022 in the Forensic Consulting team. “Every day can look vastly different however we spend a lot of time completing research, analytics and preparing written reports,” Julia says. One of the parts of the job Julia most enjoys is the report writing. “It is a challenge to complete a concise piece of writing that explains our lengthy and in depth analysis on projects.”

What do you appreciate most about your time at Grant Thornton so far? Julia appreciates the support Grant Thornton offers. “From the moment I started at Grant Thornton goal setting has been an integral conversation with my team. The senior staff push me to learn more whilst also supporting my growth and development within the company.”

How has your time at Grant Thornton been unique? “I started at Grant Thornton whilst still completing my final year of university studies. I found it incredibly rewarding to be working in the industry during this time as it helped me to see the value in my course as well as allow me to apply my skills to real world experience.”

Meet Cassie

Name: Cassie Mo
Job Title: Senior Associate
Service Line: Audit
University Attended: The University of Queensland
Degree qualification: Master degree
Year graduated: 2018

Cassie commenced at Grant Thornton in 2019, after completing a virtual audit internship with the firm while working as a tax accountant at a small accounting firm. After discovering a passion for audit, Cassie was offered a graduate position and has since been promoted to Senior Associate.

What do you enjoy most about working at Grant Thornton? “I enjoy getting to know the clients I work with, learning the ins and outs of their business and helping them to identify their business risks. I enjoy the risk assessment procedures most when we are doing the planning process.”

“Grant Thornton has offered me a lot of opportunities to gain exposure to various industries before I find my specialty.” Cassie says that Grant Thornton allows, as well as the opportunity for growth throughout her career, including currently working towards an overseas secondment with her coaching partner. “I’m looking forward to a secondment to the US in the next 12 months!”
